How to apply for new/ renew Indian Passport

As the title says apply for Indian passport, it consists two options either to apply for a fresh passport or renew/reissue.

This article covers information related to both.

Steps to apply for Fresh/Reissue of Passport

To apply for a fresh passport follow these steps orderly, without missing any steps. This is curated in order to provide best guide on how to for all your queries.

Step 1: Visit the official passport website, to navigate to the official passport website click here.

Step 2: You must first log in with your credentials by clicking existing user login or register with the relevant details using new user registration before you can log in.

Step 3:  After you are logged in on the page, click on 'Apply for New Passport/Reissue of Passport'.

Step 4: Complete filling the necessary information and submit the form.

Step 5: After submission, navigate to 'View saved/Submitted Applications' and select the particular ARN and click on 'Pay and Schedule Appointment' option under the 'payment and appointment'.

Step 6: Make the payment online using an SBI challan, internet banking, credit/debit card, or UPI and then select a date for visiting the PSK (Passport Seva Kendra).

Making payment is must before you book appointment. No appointment can be booked without paying fees.

Step 7: After choosing a time, click the link that says "Print Application Receipt" under 'Payment and Appointment' tab and print a copy of the application receipt or a SMS with appointment details will be sent your registered mobile number which is still sufficient to show at the PSK.

Note : You can only choose between available dates, appointment time cannot be selected. Also appointments are fixed for certain number of slots, exceeding that appointments for that particular date will be closed.

Step 8: Visit the PSK on the day of the appointment with the necessary original documents and self attested photocopies, as listed below and the application receipt.

Step 9: You'll will be let in according to batches with the reporting that is mentioned in your appointment receipt/message.

Step 10: As you complete your verification process from last counter  (Counter "C") you'll receive acknowledgement directly to your registered Mail ID.

Rest everything will be followed up by mail.

Documents required for a fresh passport 

  • Photo passbook of running bank account in any public sector bank, private sector bank and regional rural banks
  • A voter ID card
  • 10th Marks card
  • Aadhaar card
  • Electricity bill
  • Rent agreement
  • Driving license
  • PAN card
  • Landline or postpaid mobile bill
  • Proof of gas connection
  • Spouse’s passport copy (First and last page of the passport that includes the details of the family and mentions applicants name as the spouse of the passport holder)
  • Certificate from employer of reputed companies on letterhead.
  • Income Tax assessment order
  • School leaving certificate
  • Birth certificate issued by the Municipal Corporation
  • Policy Bond issued by the Public Life Insurance Corporations/Companies having the DOB of the holder of the insurance policy

Documents required for minors fresh passport

  • Parents original and self-attested copies of the passport should be carried
  • Proof of current address in the parent's name
  • Photo passbook of running bank account in any public sector bank, private sector bank and regional rural banks
  • Birth certificate
  • Policy Bond issued by the Public Life Insurance Corporations/Companies having the DOB of the holder of the insurance policy
  • Aadhaar card or e-Aadhaar
  • PAN Card
  • School leaving certificate/ Secondary school leaving certificate
  • School or university 10th standard mark’s card

Documents required for Reissue of passport

All the documents are mandatory:

  • Old original passport
  • Self-attested photocopy of:
    • The first two and last two pages
    • ECR/Non-ECR page
    • Page of validity extension (if any)
    • Page of observation (if any) made by Passport Issuing Authority
    • No Objection Certificate (NOC)/Prior Intimation Letter (PI)

Note: Original documents must also be produced at the counter, which will be returned after verification.


Alert on fake websites related to passport services

There are numerous unscrupulous websites and mobile apps are gathering personal information from applicants while also charging exorbitant fees for filling out online application forms and booking appointments for passport and associated services. Some of these fraudulent websites have the domain names *.org, *.in, and *.com registered, including www.indiapassport.org, www.online-passportindia.com, www.passportindiaportal.in, www.passport-india.in, www.passport-seva.in, www.applypassport.org, and numerous other sites with a similar appearance.

The official website of the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India, for applying Passport services is www.passportindia.gov.in.

Alternatively, applicants may also use the official mobile App mPassport Seva which can be downloaded from google play and iStore.
